Provost Dr. Patricia Prelock and Assistant Director for Mentoring Initiatives, Tara Chandler, honored faculty and student mentors, while connecting with undergraduate researchers at the annual VIP & CURE Poster Session.
Martha's letter of award from the office of Undergraduate Research & Scholar Development noted:
"Undergraduate Research is one of the most transformative educational experiences students can benefit from at the University of Arizona. It is clear from your nomination materials that you have gone above and beyond to ensure research is accessible to students, have provided them with the skills and funding they need for equitable access to success, and have created an environment where they can thrive and grow, both at the University of Arizona and in their post-graduation journeys. Thank you for the transformative impact you have had on the University of Arizona student community."
Accolades from her undergraduate students supported this well-deserved award, including these sentiments shared by all her students:
"Dr. Martha Whitaker's mentorship has transformed how I approach research by pushing me to think independently and work through real-world problems without predefined solutions. She provided meaningful opportunities, including presenting at the American Geophysical Union Conference, that strengthened both my technical and professional skills. Because of her mentorship, I approach research with greater independence, confidence, and a stronger ability to solve complex problems."
"Dr. Whitaker provided access to research opportunities and guided me from a beginner to an active participant in scientific research. With her mentorship, I presented at an international conference and secured internships. Her support has played a significant role in my academic and professional growth."
Congratulations, Martha, for this well-deserved recognition!
