Congratulations to HAS Professor Xiquan Dong and HAS Joint Professor Armin Sorooshian, Elected AMS Fellows Class of 2027!
Our warmest congratulations go to HAS Professor Xiquan Dong and HAS Joint Professor Armin Sorooshian on being elected Fellows of the American Meteorological Society Class of 2027! The award ceremony will be held during the AMS Annual Meeting in January 2027 in Denver. Both will have the opportunity to present keynote talks at that meeting.

AMS Fellow Selection
The AMS constitution specifies: "Those eligible for election to Fellow shall have made outstanding contributions to the atmospheric or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences or their applications during a substantial period of years." Both the nominee for Fellow and the nominator must be an active AMS member. New Fellows are elected annually by the Council from a slate submitted by the Fellows Committee of not more than two-tenths of 1 percent of all AMS Members.
Professor Dong received his Ph. D. in Meteorology from Pennsylvania State University in 1996 and did postdoctoral work at NASA Langley Research Center. He has a joint appointment with the U of A Remote Sensing and Spatial Analysis GIDP. His research can be briefly summarized in the following four areas: (1) developing the cutting-edge cloud retrieval techniques in ground-based remote sensing, 2) developing innovative methods to validate satellite cloud retrievals using ground-based results, (3) improving GCM/WRF and reanalyses simulated cloud, radiation and precipitation using surface-satellite data, and (4) investigating regional extreme events and associated feedback processes. These research efforts have been supported by DOE ARM/ASR, CESM, CMDV, EAGLE; NASA CERES, Libera, MAP, NEWS, CAN and ESS; NOAA GOES-R, MAAP and R2O; and NSF. Dong is a member of the Global Energy Balance Working Group of the International Radiation Commission and co-chaired the NASA Energy and Water Cycle Study Drought and Flood Extreme Working Group, serves as an Associate Editor for the JGR–Atmospheres. He has chaired or co-chaired multiple conferences and workshops, including one of the largest sections in AOGS2014 and AOGS2016. Dong has served as Editor for the journal Advances in Atmospheric Sciences.and received an Outstanding Editor Award for “Exceptional Contributions to Advances in Atmospheric Science” in Spring 2022.
HAS Joint Professor Armin Sorooshian
Armin received a B.S. degree in chemical engineering from the University of Arizona (2003) and a Ph.D in chemical engineering from the California Institute of Technology (2008). He completed a postdoc with the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA), which involved research with Colorado State University and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. He has been a professor in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at the University of Arizona since 2009, with courtesy appointments in Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences, the College of Optical Sciences, and the College of Public Health. Armin is both a University Distinguished Scholar and a da Vinci Fellow. His research efforts focus primarily on aerosols, trace gases, wet deposition; air quality and public health; aerosol-cloud-precipitation interactions; surface and airborne field measurements; and arid region topics. Current research activities include the NASA-supported UA VIP project, EXCITE: Measurements to Study Earth, UA lead for the GLOR project in collaboration with ASU and ADEQ, team member for the NASA ARCSIX project, and work as PI on NASA's ACTIVATE Mission, a major NASA airborne mission that is wrapping up after 7 years.
