Early in May--just before final exams--a small but select group of students was called to a mysterious meeting with Dr. Martha Whitaker, Associate Professor of Practice and Director of Graduate Studies, only to be whisked down the hallway to find a overflowing assembly of cheering students, faculty, and staff waiting to celebrate them as this year's extraordinary student scholars and leaders!
Following the announcement of the individual awards by Dr. Tom Meixner, Associate Department Head, the shocked but happy group enjoyed a delicious cake with ample lashings of cold milk.

Each week a person who makes Tucson better is “belled.” On June 12th our very own Terrie Thompson received a Ben's Bell award for her generosity and kindness helping hungry students at the University of Arizona by bringing a variety of healthy snacks, treats, tea (and foam cups, sugar, creamer, stirrers, napkins), and even Costco-sized boxes of single-serving macaroni and cheese. She leaves them anonymously in the student conference room, with friendly notes that read: “Help yourself to a snack,” Whitaker wrote in her nomination letter. For the 2018 Hurricane Season--June 1 through November 30--HAS atmospheric scientists Kyle Davis and Xubin Zeng predict a slighty below average hurricane season: 4 (2-6) hurricanes, including 2 (0-3) major hurricanes, in the North Atlantic, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.

Congratulations to Ali Behrangi, Associate Professor of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences, recently named as the Principal Investigator for a new $2.5 million NASA grant to advance the Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) over high latitude regions. With the 5-year grant, Behrangi will lead an international team of experts from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), the University of Maryland, the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Utrecht University (the Netherlands), Environment Canada, and the University of Hamburg (Germany).
