Xiaomin Chen

Associate Professor, Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences

I am fascinated by all types of atmospheric swirls, with hurricanes at the core of my research. After more than a decade as a hurricane scientist, I’ve contributed to developing boundary-layer physics schemes for NOAA’s next-generation hurricane forecast models, advancing predictions of hurricane intensity and structure. My next goal is to improve predictions of the compound hazards posed by landfalling hurricanes, including flooding, which creates an exciting connection with the Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences department’s strength in hydrology.
