Retired Director, Pima County Department of Environmental Quality

Ms. Nelson has a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from the University of Utah and is a registered professional engineer in Arizona and Utah.  Ms. Nelson has over 25 years of experience working for environmental programs, including drinking water, superfund, air quality and solid waste.  From 2000 to 2021 she has been the Director of the Pima County Department of Environmental Quality, which includes both environmental quality regulations and solid waste operations. PDEQ’s mission is to preserve and protect the environment of Pima County for the long-term benefit of residents' health, welfare, safety, and quality of life.

Ms. Nelson is a member of the National Association of Clean Air Agencies (NACAA) and serves as co-chair of the NACAA Permitting Committee. Ms. Nelson is also a local agency board member for the Western Regional Air Partnership, a voluntary partnership of states, tribes, federal land managers, local air agencies and the US EPA whose purpose is to understand current and evolving regional air quality issues in the West.
