Research Interests

McIntosh’s research focuses on understanding the extent, geologic history, and drivers (climatic, hydrologic, geologic, etc.) of water and microbial life at depth in the earth’s crust and connections to the land surface. She uses hydrochemistry to trace the origin, residence times, reactions, flowpaths, and distribution of fresh to saline waters, solutes, gases, and microbial biosignatures at local to continental scales. Her work involves extensive field sampling, chemical and isotopic analyses, and hydrologic and geochemical modeling. Results of her work have broad applications for groundwater, energy, and critical mineral resources, and she regularly serves as a technical expert for federal and international agencies, including the IAEA, UK Royal Society, US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, US Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board, and others.
