HAS Professor Steven Mullen
Dear HAS Family & Friends,

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our colleague and friend, Dr. Steven Lee Mullen, on September 1, 2025, in Tucson, Arizona. He was 73.

Steve was a tremendous asset to the University of Arizona's original Department of Atmospheric Sciences for decades and championed the fledgling Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences when it formed in 2016. His pioneering work in predictability, weather analysis, and forecasting--especially his use of ensemble forecasts to improve the prediction of atmospheric phenomena that, traditionally, have been difficult to forecast accurately--will be greatly missed. His warmth, his smile, and his great sense of humor will be cherished by all who knew him.

As Dr. Xubin Zeng shared:

“Steve was an amiable colleague, and I always enjoyed conversations with him about weather, mentoring students, and sports. He showed courage and fighting spirit while facing illness in the past few years. His teaching emphasized quantitative rigor, and he was willing to take additional training that enabled him to include that rigor even in general education classes. He was also a pioneer in ensemble weather forecasting. We will miss Steve!”

Beyond his scholarship, Steve was known for his warmth, wit, and love of family, conversation, and the outdoors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in his memory. Below is the link to his obituary.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and students. Details regarding the memorial services in November or opportunities to honor his legacy will be shared as they become available.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need support during this time.

He will be deeply missed.

With sympathy,

Peter Troch
