Help Sustain the Future of Undergraduate Hydrology at the University of Arizona

The Environmental Hydrology & Water Resources (EHY) undergraduate program at the University of Arizona stands at a pivotal moment. For nearly 60 years, our program has been a leader in hydrologic science, equipping students with the skills to tackle the world’s most pressing water challenges. From physical hydrology and advanced modeling to water chemistry and environmental sustainability, the department and our alumni professionals have established a legacy of excellence for the U of A Hydrology program.
Now we need your support to ensure that the future of our undergraduate program remains strong.  Like many STEM fields, hydrology is experiencing substantial enrollment declines, and the competition for the shrinking applicant pool is challenging. Potential students typically don’t understand the range of opportunities in physical and earth science fields covered in hydrology, and often we see alternative environmental science programs attracting students interested in Earth’s critical water problems. We need to enroll those students in EHY.
This spring we are launching a bold outreach initiative to attract new hydrology undergraduates and ensure they have the resources to succeed. Your support can help us:
  • Grow enrollment by funding targeted outreach to prospective undergraduate students (i.e. high school and community college visits, social media ad campaigns, recruitment events)
  • Expand scholarship opportunities to bring in talented students who desire a career in water resources, but might otherwise struggle to afford education
  • Support curriculum innovation as we modernize the curriculum of our undergraduate program to meet the current needs of industry in addressing present and future water challenges

With the collaborative support of the College of Science and partnerships across the U of A, we are committed to strengthening hydrology for the future. Our goal is to raise $50,000 through this initiative—every contribution, no matter the size, will help secure the future of the undergraduate program.
Our department is quickly becoming one of the few remaining hydrology-focused institutions in the country.  Let’s work together to sustain the legacy of U of A Hydrology and ensure we continue to provide our communities and industries critically needed graduates to become the next generation of water leaders. We’d love to hear from you—please reach out to Peter or Hale if you’d like to discuss this effort further. Thank you for your continued support and for being part of the hydrology legacy at the University of Arizona.
At the University of Arizona, the Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences continues to lead the way in solving the earth’s water, hydrogeologic, weather, and climate-related problems. With a Hydrology program consistently ranked in the top three programs internationally, and an Atmospheric Science program consistently ranked in the top ten nationally, we are committed to maintaining this excellence in teaching, research and outreach.
