Our warmest congratulations go to HAS Joint Professor Jennifer Duan, the 2025 recipient of the American Society of Civil Engineers' Margaret S. Petersen Award!

The award honors women "who have demonstrated exemplary service to the water resources and environmental science and engineering community," according to the society.
Duan, who joined the university in 2006, uses computer simulations to better understand and predict how water and sediment move through rivers. Her work supports the development of advanced models to address real-world challenges in river systems.
The Environmental and Water Resources Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers established the award in 2011 to honor the accomplishments of Petersen, a former UA civil engineering professor.
Petersen, the award's namesake, was a former University of Arizona faculty member who made significant contributions to the fields of hydraulics and water resources. She died in 2013.
Duan, also a professor of biosystems engineering and hydrology and atmospheric sciences, has focused much of her career on hydraulics and sediments. Currently, her research is funded by several grants from the National Science Foundation, Department of Defense and U.S. Geological Survey.
“I feel very honored to get this award. I’m inspired by Margaret Petersen’s story and her important contributions to the history of the CAEM department,” said Duan, who worked alongside Petersen."

Congratulations, Jennifer, for this well-deserved and outstanding achievement!
