Giving students a head start in Hydrology!
Sky School is a program brought to you by the UA that provides immersive, inquiry-based science programs to Arizona K-12 students. By next year, it will be bringing Hydrology to high school students thanks to our dedicated staff and graduate students!
This nine-week program will give students the chance to learn the basics of Hydrology, interact with tools in the field and bring them to incredible places like our very own Biosphere 2. They will have the opportunity to learn from college level educators and be encouraged to pursue science in ways that are not always available to high school students.
Curriculum developer, graduate student and future teacher Nathan Strom reported he is excited to be involved in the development of this program because, in his youth, attending summer camps with similar experiential, hands-on science programs first got him interested in science.
Strom is one of five other graduate students directly involved in the planning stages of this program. The nine-week program will consist of learning assignments, group projects and several field trips. That will all culminate into a prolonged stay on Mt. Lemmon where students will wrap up their projects and course learning goals.
Strom explained that most people don’t learn about hydrology until college, nor are they aware of the range of career opportunities the field offers. Even when they do learn about it, it’s not always clear what kind of career paths there are until you choose to get into college. This Sky School program aims to bring those career paths to the forefront of early life education. “There’s a lot of demand and need for Hydrologists, especially here in the southwest,” Strom said.
