John W. Harshbarger Memorial Endowment

Purpose:  The Fund is to be established to support the Harshbarger Memorial Endowment in the Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences in the College of Science at the University of Arizona. The Fund honors former Department Head and Professor Emeritus John W. Harshbarger and will support students in the Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences. The purpose of the endowment is to support research and scholarship activities of one or more students each year. Support could be used for laboratory expenses, travel, field work, conferences, professional development, or for any other purpose that encourages excellence in research and education.

Source: The endowment is established in honor of John W. Harshbarger’s enormous contribution and commitment to Hydrology and Water Resources as a discipline, and for his service as a founding member of the Department of Hydrology and Water Resources, now known as the Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences. Solicited donations will come from colleagues, friends, alumni, and students in memoriam of John W. Harshbarger to support this Fund.

Eligibility:  The John W. Harshbarger Memorial Endowment will be awarded to a student or students who meet the following criteria:

  • Recipient is a student whose academic major resides in the Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences and who is in good academic standing
  • Recipient is enrolled in full-time study during the year that the funds are awarded
  • Recipient is either an undergraduate student or a graduate student (both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible for this award)
  • Recipient is eligible for an award in multiple years, but he or she must reapply for each award period

Selection Process:  Students will apply for the award when availability is announced on the department's Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences Scholarship Opportunities webpage and to student email lists. The application process will be determined by the Academic Committee of the Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences that oversees all scholarship and fellowship funds within the Department.

Value: The amount and number of awards will vary and will depend on the annual Payout from the endowment.
