Eric Betterton, Retired as a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences in May 2021. He also held courtesy appointments in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, and in the Division of Community, Environment and Policy, Zuckerman College of Public Health.
Born and raised in Zimbabwe, he studied chemistry in South Africa, and environmental science and engineering at Caltech. He joined the University of Arizona in 1988. His research focused on environmental pollutants, especially those found in the air and water.
He taught large introductory courses in weather and climate, and smaller, more advanced courses in atmospheric physics, atmospheric chemistry, and atmospheric aerosols.
He served as head of three departments over the course of 13 years -- Atmospheric Sciences, Hydrology and Water Resources, and Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences. For two decades he served as the University of Arizona representative to the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), and ultimately chaired its Board of Trustees.
He is proudest of the achievements of the hundreds of undergradute and graduate students who passed through his laboratory over the course of his 33-year-career.
