Measures

Students are assessed through a variety of direct and indirect activities throughout their studies.

Outcome 1: Demonstrate competence to a high degree in the fundamental area of dynamic meteorology

  • Pass required core and advanced elective courses in this fundamental area

Outcome 2: Demonstrate competence to a high degree in the fundamental area of physical meteorology

  • Pass required core and advanced elective courses in this fundamental area

Outcome 3: Demonstrate competence to a high degree in one or more sub-disciplinary focal areas, such as atmospheric chemistry and aerosols, lightning and atmospheric electricity, radiation and remote sensing, tropical meteorology and tropical cylones, data assimilation, and weather analysis and forecasting AND competence in a minor (complementary) area of study in support of doctoral-level research

  • Pass advanced elective courses in selected focal areas
  • Complete a minor area of study (pass the required courses prescribed by the chosen minor department)
  • Pass a qualifying examination in the major (Doctoral Qualifying Examination process)
  • Pass written and oral comprehensive examinations in major AND minor areas of study (Doctoral Comprehensive Examination process)

Outcome 4: Demonstrate an advanced ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing

  • Attend research group meetings
  • Oral presentation at El Día del Agua y la Atmósfera, the annual student research symposium
  • Multiple presentations at regional, national, or international meetings (oral or poster presentations)
  • Complete a dissertation proposal/prospectus
  • Pass a written and oral dissertation defense (Doctoral Final Examination process)
  • Complete an exit survey

Outcome 5: Demonstrate professional competency to a high degree with multiple research tools used in atmospheric sciences, such as data analysis, visualization software, and scientific computer programming

  • Complete original research using appropriate tools and methodologies culminating in written dissertation and/or multiple papers suitable for publication in peer-reviewed journals
