GOES-R: Better, stronger, faster… and electric!

GOES-R represents a transcendental advancement in our capabilities to monitor weather from space. The two earth facing instruments, the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) and the Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM), will provide continuous imagery and lightning data over the Western hemisphere, providing important atmospheric, hydrologic, and climatic data for scientific and operational use. In particular, ABI will improve upon current GOES-imagery by providing better spatial resolution, more spectral information, and faster temporal sampling, so ABI will provide better resolution, “stronger” information, and do it faster than current instrumentation.
